When Love Refuses to Quit

When Love Refuses to Quit

Rev. LuAnne Stanley Hook, preaching Scripture References: Galatians 5:14; 6:1-10 (The Message) 1. Do you have young adults in your life? Would you say that they struggle to find meaning? Have you had conversations about this with them? What has been your experience with this, or that of yourself or others, with finding meaning in life? 2. What do you think of Arthur Brooks’ ideas of how to find meaning in life through asking the “big questions,” finding love and transcendence, looking for beauty and calling in life, and embracing suffering as a teacher? What has your experience been with any of these? Has it led to finding meaning in your life? Have any of these helped to connect you with the Source of All Meaning? 3. Rev. LuAnne states that loving our neighbors by serving is a way to experience all of the paths to meaning through the stretching experiences involved. Which parts, if any, have you experienced through loving your neighbors as yourself? Which parts, if any, have you struggled with? 4. What is your response to the C. S. Lewis quote, “If you want a religion to make you feel really comfortable, I certainly don’t recommend Christianity.” 5. Read Galatians 6:1-10 in The Message version and in another translation, if possible. What stands out to you from either version? 6. Rev. LuAnne references the phrase from The Message “a generous common life” as one that Christians are called to, and that the United Methodist connection helps to provide. What are ways that we can move further into this mindset as followers of Christ? 7. Using Galatians 6:8 as a reference, Rev. LuAnne asserts that the point of loving our neighbors is for us to grow in our responsiveness to God so that we can partner with God’s work in the world. What is your response to that?
