Why Scripture: The Value of the Word
Rev. Tish Bowman, preaching Discussion Questions: 1. The sermon begins with the concept of “The Great Exhaustion.” o Do you relate to that term? What are the main sources of exhaustion in your life right now? o How do you usually respond to feelings of being overwhelmed or depleted 2. Rev. Tish suggests that reading Scripture is not one more exhausting task, but a path toward restoration. o Do you agree or disagree? Why? o Have you ever experienced scripture as life-giving or healing in a time of stress? 3. The image of scripture being like rain for parched ground (Isaiah 55:10-11) is a powerful metaphor. o What spiritual practices “water” your life? o How could regular engagement with scripture restore your soul? 4. 2 Timothy 3:16–17 says scripture is “God-breathed” and useful for “teaching, correcting, and training.” o What does it mean to you that scripture is "God-breathed"? o Which of those four purposes (teaching, showing mistakes, correcting, training character) has scripture most done in your life? 5. The sermon talks about "Life In – Life Out." (as opposed to garbage in/garbage out) o What are you feeding your soul with these days? o How might intentionally feeding your spirit with scripture change the way you interact with the world? 6. Rev. Tish shows her well-worn, taped-up Bible and encourages us to have a “companion Bible” that journeys with us. o Do you have a Bible that feels personal or meaningful to you? Why or why not? o What would it look like for your Bible to reflect your faith journey? 7. Have you ever experienced the “Living Word” effect — a passage speaking to you differently in a new season of life? 8. What is one word, phrase, or image from the sermon that stayed with you? 9. What might God be saying to you in your current exhaustion, through scripture?
