Piety for the Whole Self: Transforming Heart and Mind
• Series: Actions Speak Louder
Rev. Tania Dozeman, preaching Romans 12:1-2 Discussion Questions A great video on the life of John Wesley: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRRqKe3QB5c In the sermon, the bread box was used as an example of how different generations have things to teach us. What’s something that you’ve learned from a generation different than your own? How do you understand the difference between works of mercy and works of piety? Why do you think both are important in the life of a disciple? Are you more in one direction than another? How about our church? John Wesley's experience on the stormy sea and his eventual “heartwarming” moment at Aldersgate was a key turning point for him. Have you ever had a moment when you felt God’s grace in a personal and transformative way? How did that moment change you? The sermon talks about “means of grace” as a way to actively participate in God’s love and grace. How do you currently practice the means of grace in your own life? Are there areas where you feel you could deepen your engagement with God’s grace? Were there any invitations in the sermon that sounded good to you? Romans 12:1-2 speaks about being transformed by renewing the mind and not conforming to the world’s patterns. How do you interpret this idea in the context of our current societal and cultural struggles? What does it look like to live a transformed life in today's world?
